We are very happy that our recent paper on C-H functionalization of benzothiazoles via phosphonium intermediates is among the most read papers in Organic Letters this month. Read the paper here, check out other publications from our group here, and read other most-read articles from Org. Lett. here.

Apr 2020 – New papers in ChemComm and Org. Lett.
FSU Jena remains in emergency operation due to the public health crisis and the group is working from home. There is some positive news in these challenging times: our papers are accepted for publication in Organic Letters and Chemical Communications (linked from the publications page). Congrats to You, Markus, Fritz and Konrad and thanks for your hard work.
Feb 2020 – Lab renovations begin
Crash! Boom! Bang! Just some of the sounds coming from our labs at the moment. Some of our group members, chemicals and equipment have found refuge in the neighboring labs (thanks to AG Arndt, AG Schacher and AG Balducci!) while others are focusing on office work during lab renovations. We are all very excited about a new start in the newly refurbished labs in April!
More importantly, we finally have more time to write and submit papers which is a great lead-in to Ivan’s tenure evaluation. Stay tuned!
Feb 2020 – Synthesis of P-rhodamines in OBC
Maria’s and Veselin’s work on a short and versatile route to P-rhodamines is published in Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry (linked from our publications page).
Jan 2020 – Konrad Wagner defends his MSc thesis
Congratulations to Konrad for finishing and defending his master thesis!
Jan 2020 – Thieme Chemistry Journals Award
The work of our group has been recognized by the 2020 Thieme Chemistry Journals Award. We are honored and humbled by the award.
The Thieme Chemistry Journals Award is presented every year to up-and-coming researchers worldwide who are in the early stages of their independent academic career as an assistant or junior professors. The awardees are selected exclusively by the editorial board members of SYNTHESIS, SYNLETT, and SYNFACTS who constantly watch out for promising, young individuals working in chemical synthesis and catalysis or closely related areas of organic chemistry. Since 1999 – when the award was given for the first time to young researchers – it is its aim to send a sign of recognition and career encouragement to the new generation of organic chemists.
Dec 2019 – Synthesis of β-Lactams in Synlett
Latency is not always required… the nucleophiles are not latent but the paper is because You and Markus have waited way too long for this one to be published. Read all about it in Synlett (linked from our publications page). Well done guys!
Dec 2019 – Faschingsvorlesung & Holiday party
The class of 2015 has chosen Ivan to be their Patron / Schirmherr for the Chemikerball 2020. Photos coming soon.
We celebrated the holiday season with a trip to Kurz & Kleinkunstbühne followed by mulled wine at the Christmas market and dinner at Ratszeise. Fun was had by everyone (but the photographic evidence from the end of the evening might be NSFW).
Dec 2019 – Synthesis of pyrrolizin-1-ones in JOC
We’ve put latent nucleophiles to good use and prepared enantioenriched pyrrolizin-1-ones. Read all about it in JOC (linked from our publications page). Well done Markus and You!
Nov 2019 – Long Night of Sciences in Jena
The group hosts visitor for the Long Night of Sciences in Jena.
More info at: http://www.lndw-jena.de/. Photos coming soon to our group gallery!
Sep 2019 – Angewandte Chemie Editor’s Choice
Ivan was awarded the Angewandte Chemie and ChemBioChem Editor’s Choice Award for the best presentation at the Bioorganik2019 symposium in Essen. Michael Giese, Jochen Niemeyer and Jens Voskuhl did a great job organizing this year’s meeting featuring Ben List as the Beer & Pretzel lecturer.
Sep 2019 – Denis and Markus present at GDCh WiFo
Yet another great meeting in Aachen. We were happy to show our work on Lewis base catalysis and the chemistry of allyl diazo compounds.
Sep 2019 – Suresh and Walid are our new PhD students
Suresh Kumar joins the group from IISER Mohali, India and Walid Al-Jammal from Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid, Jordan will join us in October. We are excited to have them in Jena. Welcome and good luck with your research!
Sep 2019 – Ivan presents at ISySyCat 2019
A fantastic line-up of speakers from both academia and industry. Prof. Anthony Burke and his team have created an excellent biannual meeting in a wonderful UNESCO world heritage town of Evora and we’ll be back in 2021!
Aug 2019 – Summer outing to Hohenfelden
This year’s summer outing was a blast with climbing and grilling. Check out the photos in our gallery soon.
Aug 2019 – Maria Sauer defends her MSc thesis.
Our most colorful thesis so far! Congrats Maria!
Maria will stay with us for some time before starting her PhD (good luck with the new challenges at the Hans Knöll Institute!).
Jul 2019 – Valerie Kerndl defends her BSc thesis.
Congratulations on a job well done Valerie!
Valerie will be travelling to exotic places in the coming months but we hope she will return to Jena soon.
Jul 2019 – Wenxue Huang joins as IAESTE intern.
Wenxue will spend his IAESTE internship in the group this summer. Welcome Wenxue!
Jun 2019 – First summer outing in 2019
Waiting for summer to officially begin, the group celebrates recent publications and birthdays with a barbecue in our Magnolienhof. Photos coming soon!
May 2019 – Our work on latent nucleophiles in Lewis base catalyzed allylation is in Angewandte Chemie
